Exercise 2 (Repetition and Emphasis)
LECTURES
Topic 2: Balance & Emphasis
In design, Balance means equal distribution visual weight.
Symmetrical
- Classic symmetrical with equal weight on the sides with a centrally placed fulcrum.
- Radial symmetrical : enhance movement and brings attention or focus to the central.
- Approximate symmetrical : when the design is equivalent but not necessary identical.
Asymmetrical
-characteristics : an unequal distribtution, may include a dominant element/s and less focal points.
- Asymmetrical balance brings more varieties (increase its complexity)
- This composition may evoke feelings of movement, modernism, vitality and energy.
Golden Ratio
-Evokes the feeling of perfect beauty.
- Usually use for their excellence at making harmony, balance, and structure.
- can be rotated
Rule of Thirds
-composition guideline that place subject/s on the intersection of divided evenly thirds line (can be horizontally or vertically).
- Use to create more dynamism.
Emphasis (and Dominance)
- created to create focus in a design work
-can be achieved by different composition of color, shape, value
Topic 3: Repetition & Movement
Repetition
: create pattern/ rhythm also sometimes can convey a feeling of movement/ being active.
- Variety play an important role to avoid monotony and boring composition.
Fig.2.1 Example of Repetition(sources. Lecture Presentation)
The variety or slight changes could be applied by changing the size, angle, composition, and exposure.
Hierarchy: Choreography of content in a composition. It enhances the most essential information first and then identifies navigation throughly to the audience.
Movement : the aim on this feature is to make an illusion n by following the seems to be moving visual image. It makes us follow a certain path. Can be achieved in many ways. For example, by a repeated design, contrast, etc.
Alignment : placement of elements that leads people through design. Evokes the sense of unity and cohesion.

INSTRUCTION
Exercise 2 - Repetition
1. Visual Research
Fig.2.3.0 Visual Research_1 (sources. Pinterest)
Figure above was one of the first design that I found when conducting visual research for repetition. The pattern above is based on one coffee image but uniquely to avoid monotony the creator seems try to mirror the image therefore It creates more variety in the final work. The concept is yet simple but impactful. Thus, I add this technique to my final repetition design later.
Fig. 2.3.1 Visual Research_2(sources. Pinterest)
Initially, I was searching for an illustration repetition works that have a similar feeling or feature with the fig above because I'm planning to draw a simple character for my design. The Fig 2.3.1 present the same pattern across the design but it isn't boring because it use a wide variety of color. Additionally, this work also inspire me to make an animal as the theme of my design.
2. Idea Exploration
I choose black cats as character reference because they have an obvious contrast on their feature. When we see them, our attention get directed to their lighter shade color eyes compare to the whole body(or fur). Therefore, I use this appealing characteristic to show the variety eye colors that this creature might have.
Fig.2.3.3 Cat Illustration Reference (sources. Pinterest)
I found this artwork from Pinterest and use this as my reference to sketch for a cat figure.
I majorly use procreate as a tool for my sketching and final draft in this exercise.
I did experimented for a few sketches before coming to the final sketch for my cat design.
The first trial was actually based on other reference and It was actually quite poor as the picture is cropped so I can't really attempt to draw a full body shot. Then, I change my reference to fig 2.3.2 and the first attempt was a terrible in proportion. Although, in the second attempt I try to just completely ignore the cat's feet and try to make it simpler. Plus, I also try to add a tail but the figure aren't satisfying enough. Finally, on the final cat sketch I corrected the tail and use a thicker pen to draw the outline to make the line more visible. Beside, I change the eye shape/expression as well.
I need a further research for the variety of cat's eye color. Then, after observing fig 2.3.6 I finally settled on LIGHT BLUE, YELLOW, LIGHT GREEN when searching for the color palette.

Feedback
W4 - As I was late on submitting my sketch work there is no further feedback to dive into but I did ask Ms. Jinchi if this work is good to be submitted and she said it's okay.
Exercise 2 - Emphasis
1. Visual Research
Fig.2.4.0 Visual Research_1 (sources. Pinterest)
Fig.2.4.1 Visual Research_2 (sources. Pinterest)
Similarly, to the fig 2.4.0 this one also have the same emphasis design but with a more lesser hue in it. As I want to choose only a few colors in my emphasis exercise, I notice that the brightness and contrast in here plays a big role and want to apply the same technique too on my final design later.
2. Idea Exploration
Fig. 2.4.3 Reference for surprise box (sources. Pinterest)
Honestly at first the idea of having a surprise box just came on my mind. The idea came from a gacha game in form of gift box. For example, you bought 10 gatcha and each box represent as a mystery box and sometimes you might get a special box that contain more value than the other boxes. Therefore in this exercise, I want to emphasize and centralized the focus to the special box.
My first sketch was actually lack of ideas and exploration even my first final draft was not satisfying enough. However, initially I did settled on the idea of a present/gift box and it shows on this sketch.
On my 2nd attempt for sketching, I tried to draw gift box from several perspectives because I want my central focus box to have a slightly distinct feature on it. In here, I try to slightly open the box to express that feature. Also, I attempt to make an arrangement for my design to show all the mystery boxes. Additionally, I also add a "?" to indicate mystery boxes and "!" for the special box.
From this poster design, I choose their BLUE, YELLOW, and PINK hue for my color palette. Later on, I arrange the BLUE as its the darkest to be the background, the PINK as the mystery boxes and YELLOW (the most brightest therefore act as the central point) for the special box.

Feedback
W3 - I have to conduct more visual research for emphasis because my initial research inspiration was more on repetitive rather than emphasis principle. The initial work was also poorly done as I it does not give any centre attention. Therefore, I have to re do this exercise.
W4 - Fortunately, my revised work was done better than before so I can submit this one on Friday.
REFLECTION
We got to learn more principles such emphasis, repetition, hierarchy which can helped us a lot to have a better design application later on. We also assigned to create two exercises in this weeks which was pretty challenging but I could say is the one that I enjoyed the most. I researched a lot of interesting and mind blown design portfolio from other artists in Pinterest and many are inspiring to me. Although, I wished I when through my works earlier therefore I could have generate better works.
