Exercise 3
LECTURES
Topic 4: Harmony and Unity
Harmony, the selection of elements in our design which shares a common features that fit together. This principle needs variety(change/slightly difference in elements) to avoid monotony.

Fig.4.0 Example of Harmony (sources. Recorded Lecture)
Unity, evokes a sense of oneness. refers to the repetition of particular elements inside our design(color, shapes, materials, icon) to create the look together. Give a different experience with harmony.
- some can delivered a movement principle too

In order to make a good composition, Scale and Proportion, refer to the size in design elements. Have been used to depict or distract from the idea.
Scale, size of one object in relation to a specific unit of measure. (can be small/bigger in size)
- two types: actual measurement & visual estimated based on composition.
- Ex. applied scales: architectural and scale models.
- can create dramatic results and visual interest within the design or fun.
Proportion, the relationship of two or more elements in a composition and how they compare to each other with respect to size, color, quantity, degree, setting, etc. May called harmonious if a correct relationship present. Usually found in harmony and unity.
Topic 5: Symbol, Word, and Image
Symbols, a sign, shape, or object that is used to represent something else (convey information).
-Modern day: logo, product icon, timeless concept and value.
-Types: Pictorial (image related but simplified, usually us in education), abstract look like what they represent but with less detail, arbitary has no resemblance with the object but represent the idea.
Word and Image
: vital part of design. To make the viewers feel relatable with the concept and design, it needs a suitable and relevant images and text.
INSTRUCTION
Exercise 3: Unity and Harmony
1. Visual Research
Fig.3.1.1 Visual Research (sources. Pinterest)
The figure above I personally think is one of the best work example of unity that I have found in Pinterest. If you can see the smaller size square can be grouped together and create a bigger square which express the oneness that we need in unity. Then, the theme of creating human figure in a limited space (a square) also really unique to capture different human expression. However, from this figure I adopt their technique of using a repeated shape to create unity.
Fig.3.1.2 Visual Research (sources. Pinterest)
Initially I was really focused on searching reference for harmony and encounter many different figure like the one above. I really love the doodle kind of theme that makes the shape expressive on their own way. Therefore, later on my design I'm trying to convey different kind of emotions/personality like sad, angry, shy, excited, and etc.

Fig.3.1.4 Color palette
Honestly, Pinterest really does provide a lot of great color palette that are harmonious and I choose the color above as it is one of the nice combination that I have encountered. However, I would love to venture more diversity for my final design later on.

Fig.3.1.6 Unity shape sketch
As I have mentioned in the idea exploration section, I use a repeated shape that would eventually make a bigger shape of it and I choose triangle. The purpose from using this shape just for having a different design with my reference in fig. 3.1.1.
Fig.3.1.7 Final Sketch
In the final sketch can be seen each emotion/personality that expressed differently by each triangle. I also tried to grouping the same emotion for the same color of triangle to make a connection across the design.

Fig.3.1.8 More Color Exploration (Source. Pinterest)
I've did some further research for color selection and as the feedback from the Week 6, the B palette in fig 3.1.8 is good to show several more contrast on my triangle design.
Fig.3.2.10 Work Progression for final Outcome(2)
For the final outcome I tried to make the triangle have a bit more variety such in angle differences or size and adding some overlay composition therefore It would not come to monotonous. To achieve this I tried to resketch a lil bit. As you can see in fig 3.2.10 the bigger outline triangle on the back was there for a guideline purposes only.

Feedback
W6: The expression was already okay but it will be great to overlay or tilt some of the triangle/ try to explore the composition a lil bit therefore the design will look more interesting.
Exercise 3: Image and Text
1. Visual Research
As I have settled down on which photo to use on this exercise, I'm trying to explore more on the feature as contrast or alignment of the typography and object in a picture. The picture above shows the balance between the text above right and the women on below. This principle will be helpful as my exercise have a similar placement like the figure 3.2.0.
For the figure above, I took more observation on the alignment of the text. We can see how the title type size are bigger and might use a roman/bold typeface there. For the description, it use a light typeface to indicate the hierarchy of importance. You will see this principle later on my work.
2. Idea Exploration
Fig.3.2.2 Photo from my gallery
In this assignment, the research field are quite wide and have a lot of variety therefore I tried to narrow down by searching photos from my gallery first then I did a visual research to get more inspiration added to my photo. Photo above was taken in my trip to South Korea in 2019 using a mirrorless digital camera. It is a figure of a guard outside of one of the most tourist cluttered palace in their capital city, Seoul.
For the text, This guard depicts their existence like a doll as they stand still for a long hour therefore I choose the word 'Mannequin' as the title to highlight their uniqueness. I also added a description to emphasis more on my intention here.
I tried to experiment on the alignment of the text here using 'Helvetica' to make the words appear more clean and easier to read but still maintain elegance on it. However, I'm still thinking on changing it to other typeface once I imported my work to Photoshop and Illustrator.

For the final design, I ended up still using Helvetica as the typeface for the title on the picture and finished this on adobe illustrator.
3. Final Outcome

Feedback
W5: It will be nice to maintain the contrast color for the figure in the picture rather than turn it to black and white hue. Maintain the font.
REFLECTION
In this task it will mark our last exercise for the principles before going into project one and I could say its the most enjoyable exercises that I have done. Especially in the image and text principal, I got the time to start on this part earlier therefore I have more time on experimenting. I got to apply the technique that I learned in Digital Photography & Imagining about adjustment. For the other exercise regarding 'Unity', I was struggled a bit because it was quite a challenge to understand this principle as it has this thin difference with harmony. Although, after some feedbacks and further reading I felt more knowledgeable about this topic.
