LECTURE
Essentially designer's role to solve a problem with an effective design
communication and applied in many form and medias inside it.
Observation
We are required to be analytical, pay attention to every single detail
to achieve an optimal observation. This method also effectively helps
designer to get inspiration which can be observe through
daily happenings, physical surroundings, artifacts, etc. (Ex.
Biomimicry: nature applied in design). Observation enable designer
to see the 'problems' and even can furtherly help in overcome the solution
for it.
8 Ways To Improve Power of Observation
1. Know you subject.
2. Slow down and look outward.
3. Try something new.
4. Improve your concentration by cutting out distraction.
5. Challenge yourself to a mental workout.
6. Test your observation by playing a memory game.
7. Record and consider your observation.
8. Stay inquisitive!
Sense of Place
1. Try to recall about a place that have a lasting memory/went
through/most familiar.
2. Think about the way to express the sense of place from the place that
you choose.
3. Record the observation. Can be applied in any sort of media
(Photography, diary, etc.)
4. Make a mind map to help breakdown your ideas.
5. Determine which medium to work with! Can be anything start from
photography, illustration, scale model)

Project 2: Sense of Place
1. Visual Research - Photography

For this project, I am going to use the element of photography for my media to express sense of place. The photography above give me the feel of resilience and somehow peace from the stillness of the building. Also, the color gradient that used by the photographer is my favorite part in this visual research.

This 2nd Visual Research actually have the same reason as the fig 1.1 of why I choose it as my inspiration. It just add more variation of color approach for different times of the day.

Figure above shows a great contrast between the night sky and the dim yellow light coming from inside the store. I also love the hint of quietness inside from this photography that give the feel of cozy night so I assume this will be a good reference for a nighttime photography.
2. Visual Research - Collage

Due to my media in this project is a photography element, I tried to look up on for some digital poster collage. And I stumble on this design that I found really nice showing the color contrast between green and orange hues. I also inspire to the layout from this poster that seems like it trends lately like the use of modern serif and a twinkle element on the corner of the poster.

I also have this additional inspiration for book cover that has the different layout with the fig. 1.5 and shows an illustration approach to the finishing design. And there is also an overline tree composition that being done so nice but still minimalist.
3. Observation
I have just recently moved out to Malaysia for study and initially I was inspired to take a theme base on my quarantine experience. However, I didn't documented that much of photos for me to proceed my idea and the feedback that was given by Ms. Jinchi. Therefore, I observe again the space around me.

Here shows my study desk that I have been trying to make it as pleasing as I can. For me, my productivity space is really important and making them look aesthetic really helps me on keeping me hard working.

This is the other side of my study desk. This fig actually gives more variety that seems like depict more sense of place
4. Idea Exploration
After some observation, I concluded to capture the sense of place that remind us for being productive and organize.

Although, I have changed my theme my layout ideas still the same with the former theme so I'm still including this figure as my sketch.

|
| Fig. 1.10 My Sketch for this project's collage |
The media that I use for this project is photography so I thought it might be better to use a proper prop like camera to capture my objects.
|
|
| Fig. 1.11 Raw photo (taken by me) |
Among all of the photos that I have taken this one has better composition therefore I choose it to go to the next step.

|
| Fig. 1.12 Filter in VCSO |
Here, I use application VSCO for filter/adjustment layer. They have more convenient and faster usage when color correcting than photoshop.

| Fig. 1.14 1st attempt final |
This is my first attempt of the collage. I was thinking because of there is quite an abundant amount of Muji product and also their product appeals for stationery product, it might be will be nice if I create a 'sense of place' in a product poster like this figure. Although then, I thought it not really inclined with my sketch and maybe trying for an actual collage will be better to conduct then I turned down this 1st attempt final work.
|
|
| Fig. 1.15 2nd Attempt to make Collage work |
For my 2nd attempt, my layout and editing heavily referenced to the figure 1.4 Visual Research. I really want to try that modern looking poster so here I tried to breakdown the image to three pieces.
|
|
| Fig. 1.16 Color Palette |
Because I am afraid of getting the wrong color so I use adobe color to help me generate a decent gradient for the background of my digital poster.

As the message from the 'sense of place' here is to regain the memory of being all productive and organize then I added a text that said "let's plan with me."

FEEDBACK
W10 - Ms. Jinchi gave me some suggestion to experiment with the food tray. I may add a collage of some everyday routine in the quarantine theme.
REFLECTION
This project was actually quite hard to conduct as I wasn't really clear with idea of 'sense of place'. However, after I saw some of other student's work in the feedback lecture section, I started to gain more understanding of its meaning. Through this project, I was really happy that I got a experiment with the angle of the photo and filter as photography is one of the field that I really want to be good at. Also, the process on arranging the collage layout was really challenging but I got to learn many new features in Adobe Illustrator. My only regrets take away is I wish I can separate more time for this project to make a better work.
