Project 1: Instructable Poster

INSTRUCTION

promptAn infographic poster for ONE recipe selected from Pasta Grannies
Study one video, breakdown and chunk the preparation and cooking process into an instructable poster. Try to capture each Grandma’s personality and unique dish identity in your poster as part of the narrative structure.

- Poster size: 1240 × 1750 pixels or 2048 × 2048 pixels

Use the assets from Project 1 Instructable Infographic poster into a 60 secs motion graphic. Once again, capture the aesthetics and narrative of the poster with movements, SFX and music. Requirement:

- Max 60 seconds infographic video 720p: 1280x720 pixels (H26/mp4) published on YouTube (set to Unlisted)

01: ART DIRECTION & MOODBOARD

The pasta grannies video I choose is title
How to make a classic tiramisù dessert from Treviso! | Pasta Grannies

Pic 1.1  Recipe from  'How to make a classic Tiramisu dessert from Treviso'

Pic 1.1  provide the breakdown information(recipe) that is explained on pasta grannies video. As the information given was unorganised by the grannies, I tried to organise it based on some of L.A.T.C.H Principles. Here how break the information down
  • Category: 'Ingredients' and 'How to'

  • Time: Steps 1 until 12

  • Hierarchy: 'Filling Process' to 'Assembly Process'

Pic 1.2 Art Direction

As for the art style and inspiration are a simple flat vector illustration. I want to play more on with Ai - effects for the texture rather than a digital hand drawn. Seems like the style also commonly use on intractable poster I found.

02: SKETCHING

The whole sketching process will be done in black n white/grayscale because it's easier to do so as I don't have to concern on the color palette first. It's also better to see the overall poster composition.

Sketching all the ingredients and process provided on (pic 1.1)
   - Before: Sketching on a book, a really rough one. It's just to get a grasp how the drawing sequence gonna be.
   - After: It's a more refine sketches and will be the one use on the digitalisation later on. I use procreate to draw on this step.

Pic 1.4 Sketch: Cream Filling Process

*Bowl: Will be different color for white and yellow eggs mixture to indicate the differences.

Pic 1.5  Sketch: Assembly Process

After sketching for each properties required then I proceed on the poster layout sketches. Mostly to identify the hierarchy and overall composition of the poster such as text, title, content, and obviously the drawings.
      - Before: Really Rough idea on how the elements will be placed. I did have several ideas in mind. But, I want to make sure that the category between 'Ingredients' and 'How to' can truly be differentiate.
      - After: layouts attempts to make a clearer instruction per steps and also dividing between the 'Filling Cream' and 'Assembly' Process. I want to make sure people notice there are two processes on making the tiramisu.

03: DIGITALISAITON

Color Palette use here are as bellow, which indicate a warm and cozy feeling just like how the grandma describe this dishes.

Pic 1.8 Color Palette

I start of my digitalise the main object which is the TIRAMISU from here I learnt on which effects and style I want to use on poster. This help on digitalising the rest which are the Ingredients, Mixture, and Assembly Process. I use mostly grain (stippled) effect and halftone on some places as well. Below are all the elements:

Pic 1.9 Digitalise Tiramisu
Pic.1.10  Digitalise Ingredient
Pic. 1.11 Digitalise Mixture (Change from Cream Filling Process to Mixture)
Pic.1.12 Digitalise Assembly
I went through and change the illustration for 'Assembly Process' as the previous one look more confusing and harder to draw. Hence, above I change the angle to be more 2d to resolve of the problem.

(Poster Layout)

Draft 1# : I tried to organise the process information first.
Draft 2#: I have change in mind and instead go with a filled boxes as it more noticeable and more easier to differentiate between the process.
Draft 5#: Here I add some circle to fill in the negative space that seems imbalance.

Final Poster 1: Instructable Poster

Final Poster: I adjust some alignment and the circle so they look more put together.

04: ANIMATION

For the animation, as I don't get much time to dwell in it, my first attempt was too brainstorming what animation I was going to do on each frames. As I already have a clear idea on how to do the animation so I just have to think on how what to move/animate there. I also pick a music to match the poster theme.

Pic.1.14 Animation Brainstorming

I right away make the AI Files and import it right away to AE to be animated.

Here are the slides for the frame breakdown:

As I've mentioned before that I don't get much time. I'm not using any fancy movement and just focus on the basic transform function on AE. I focus on making the video transitioned well from one frames to another. so, it won't be boring to watch.
