Task 3A: Type Design & Communication
1. Visual Research
On week 7, we were assigned in Task 3A to design a typeface. For sketch purpose we can choose 4 letter that contain 1 DESECENDER, 1 ASCENDER, 1 within the x-height. This are the words that we eventually have to make for our final typeface "a I m e p y t r g d o b ! . ,'
From the beginning, I was planning more into sans serif design and I encountered this typeface that seems modern yet minimalist.

2. Sketch

Option 1#: From the week 8 recorded lecture, the lecturer suggest to try following a certain brush stroke. So, I picked a flat brush from procreate and just try to create something about it. However, this one is not really planned well. Therefore, I didn't proceed it to be my chosen typeface.
Option 2#: My first Attempt of thinking to sketch a san serif inspired typeface.
Option 3# This sketch was inspired by Helvetica and Univers extended. I personally really like this two san serif font so I want to create something that is based on this two font's characteristic.
Option 4#: As I went through with sketching, I also added more variation of ideas from different typeface group. Therefore, at first I thought of making a serif looking typeface with this one and it turns out that the lecturer suggest me to proceed with this one as it shows a characteristic with the ellipse design.
Combined the idea from my sketches and the visual research I came out with the final sketch below:

This sketch where I've done it on procreate will later be digitalized in illustration.
3. Digitalisation in Illustrator
Before start the digitalization, we are required to search a similar font from the 10 compulsory typeface that is similar/ can be use as reference for our typeface. I choose 'Futura Std Bold' as it the most closest with my sketch in fig. 4
fig.6 Character 'g' breakdown Futura Std Bold' (26/10/2021)
fig.7 Character 'g' work progress (26/10/2021)
Here I have a difficulty to determine the thin and thickness of the character 'g' and I use the method from W9 lecture to draw individual square to measure the height.
fig.8 Typeface 'Bend' outcome from Illustration (26/10/2021)
Why 'Bend'? the name came out from the technique that I use the most to make this typeface. Technically, for the basic shape instead of using a perfect triangle, I titled the upper side little bit.
Measurements
Ascender Line: 710 pt
Cap Line: 676 pt
Median Line: 500pt
Descender Line: -220 pt
4. Importing to Fontlab7
Here are the evidence for the process of completing the fontlab7.
My left and right kerning for each characters are 10 pt as this typeface are tended to be use fluidly and when it near to each other it shows the nicest result to read.

FEEDBACK
Week 8
General feedback: Didn't get feedback because of Independent Learning Week
Specific feedback: Didn't get feedback because of Independent Learning Week
Week 9
General Feedback: The point for period, exclamation and above the character 'I' has different sizes. period is bigger than the word 'I' and the exclamation will be between it.
Specific Feedback: After I showed my sketch, it is recommended for me to venture on my 4th option as it present more clear intention especially on the character 'r'.
REFLECTION
Experience: Designing a typeface is definitely need extra thinking and more mindful approach towards the process of making. This exercise rather is a challenging one because we have to breakdown and analysis each character. Overall, it was a really good experience for me to get familiar with the topic.
Observation: During the class, I found out that many of my peers done this assignment pretty quickly or rather look for some of them. Although, its not the case for me. I do need more time and thinking when it comes to designing a good typeface.
Findings: Operating the fontlab7 was really a fun experience! I was confused at first but after sometime, the operational itself its quite straightforward and simple. Additionally, I also learn new feature in illustrator such as pathfinders.
